Step 1: Basic Dog Training

All dogs require basic obedience training in order to enroll in most therapy dog programs. The AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) checklist is a good starting point to prepare your dog for obedience training. For some therapy dog organizations, CGC certification is a prerequisite, but not all organizations require it.

Step 2: Enroll in Therapy Dog Organizations

Once your dog has mastered the necessary obedience skills to become a therapy dog, they can enroll in one or multiple local therapy dog organizations. These organizations have experienced dog handlers that will ensure your dog has the necessary skills in order to participate well in volunteer settings.
